TurboCool: New government funded development project

The time has finally come: Together with SADAP Adaptive Solutions and Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, we will be developing a refrigerant compressor for natural refrigerants – in this case: Propane (R290) – based on media gap motor technology as part of the ZIM (Central Innovation Program for SMEs). As a high-speed turbomachine is used, cost-efficient and durable aerodynamic bearings can be used thanks to the lightweight rotor design. This in turn means oil-free refrigerant compression for heat pumps and chillers.
Thanks to the hermetic separation of refrigerant and electric drive made possible by the design of the media gap motor, this technical approach can be used for almost all refrigerants – even ammonia.

In this project, a functional model in single-stage charging is being developed and constructed in order to demonstrate the functionality of this concept for booster applications (refurbishment of old buildings). If successful, versions with two-stage turbo charging are also being considered in order to achieve a higher heat stroke and extend the range of applications for this technology. We are looking forward to the project and would like to thank AiF Projekt GmbH and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action for the approval process and the funding of the two-year project.
