The Cross-Charger®
– turbo by wire
Actuator for the electrification of exhaust gas turbochargers
Electrically assisted turbocharging reduces fuel consumption and emissions, increases engine agility, and facilitates hybridization and the use of alternative fuels such as H2.
The Cross-Charger drive is an electric drive system that can be combined with any conventional turbocharger to create an electrically assisted turbocharger (eaTC). At the same time, the cross-charger generates additional electrical energy from the exhaust gas stream that would otherwise go unused.
The idea of electrifying turbochargers developed from the media gap engine and the corresponding patents.
Here, the approach was completely new, especially due to the special bearing and the possibility of cooling the engine with the charge air flowing through it.
G+L accompanied the implementation of the Cross-Charger® over the last few years – with its existing knowledge from manufacturing and industrialization – all the way to various licensing agreements.
In 2017, G+L innotec GmbH succeeded in granting a first and in 2022 another exclusive license. Further licenses are in preparation or negotiation.
Only with successful results a commercialization of the cross-charger could take place at all. In the meantime, the results achieved have become the benchmark in the industry.
